mnemonics
Usage and Application: Mnemonics are memory tricks useful in facilitating learning and memorization of hard-to-remember material, such as long lists, rules of grammar, spelling of difficult words, or mathematics (Ormrod, 2012).
Advantages: Mnemonics help with memory retrieval. First, they help students organize the material. Second, they help learners to relate the new material to information that is already stored in their long-term memory. Finally they provide retrieval cues to help students retrieve the information later from long-term memory (Ormrod, 2012). Mnemonics also help to create interest in studying and prevent redundancy (Cengage Learning, N.D.).
Disadvantages: Mnemonics should be used sparingly or they could become cumbersome and can add confusion to students’ learning processes. If mnemonics are not studied accurately they can actually hinder recall. Mnemonics can be time-consuming to create and practice. Students may also develop an illusion of knowing, or a false belief that they understand a concept that they actually do not (Cengate Learning, N.D.).
